Arthur M. Bodin named to Family Law Advisory Commission

PALO ALTO, CA, September 12, 2003 - Arthur M. Bodin, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow of the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto and Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the UCSF School of Medicine, has been chosen by the State Bar of California to be the public member of the Family Law Advisory Commission of the Board of Legal Specialization. The three-year term is effective September 7 and runs through October 8, 2006.

The Commission's responsibilities include: overseeing the grading of specialty examinations for attorneys and other family law experts; auditing approved educational activities; making appointment recommendations to fill commission vacancies; and recommending changes to the standards for certification and re-certification.

MRI Director Dr. Wendel Ray said, "We applaud the state for recognizing the depth and breadth of Art Bodin's long and distinguished career. He is a Past President of the California Psychological Association and of the Family Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association, and has long served on the Forensic Psychology Committee of the California Psychological Association."

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Bodin's work includes validating his Relationship Conflict Inventory and his Teasing and Bullying Survey. Holding three board certifications - Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology, and Family Psychology - he has been affiliated with MRI since 1965.

Dr. Bodin's appointment is but one of many honors and accolades for MRI. Internationally recognized for outstanding achievements in family and brief therapy (a truncated, highly focused, and efficient methodology for problem resolution) and family research and theory, MRI was the home of the first federally-funded family therapy training program, the first family therapy journal, Family Process, and a pioneering brief therapy project. Since the Institute's founding, MRI research associates have published more than 650 journal articles and book chapters as well as 65 books translated into 80 languages.
