Arthur Bodin: Counseling Approach

There are many reasons people consult a psychologist. Whatever the reason, I tailor the approach to each person or family and each set of concerns. I avoid a "one size fits all" approach and have no preconceptions about the relative importance of focusing on thoughts, feelings, and actions. Many people find it useful to focus largely on the present, to explore the past when it promises to unlock possibilities for new directions, and to focus on the future when planning for realistic change. Brief therapy is often possible and sometimes even preferable. My belief that many concerns can be resolved with brief therapy opens the door for individuals, couples, and families to discover how to cope efficiently with specific problems or concerns.

More fundamental changes may result from longer psychotherapy, particularly for those interested in more extensive exploration to improve understanding of self and others. Developing empathy, sensitive emotional expressiveness, and conflict resolution skills can enhance the ability to build and maintain rewarding personal relationships and work effectiveness. Such changes often increase one's sense of confidence, competence, and satisfaction. Some people find it useful to focus on personality, mood, and/or health concerns. Others enjoy meaningful improvements in the balance of happiness and unhappiness which can flow from even small changes in one's ability to rebut one's negative thoughts and to notice one's positive life experiences.
